MELASMA

What is Melasma

Melasma is a common skincare condition where the skin develops brown and gray patches. This skin discoloration is usually found on certain areas of the face, including the bridge of the nose, cheeks, and above the upper lip. The hyperpigmentation can also appear on other parts of the body often exposed to the sun, like the neck and arms.

How is it triggered

Melasma can affect men and women, but it is much more common in women.  A fluctuation or change in hormones often triggers this.  People who go on birth control pills or take hormonal replacement medicines may also experience the problem because of the hormone fluctuations. Other triggers for melanoma include exposure to UV rays from the sun, which can encourage untreated faded melasma patches to resurface. Certain skin care products may also irritate the skin and worsen the melasma.
