Rosacea is a common but poorly understood disorder that primarily involves the face. It appears in adult life often in the later 30s to early 40s and is often initially characterized by facial flushing with persistent redness. Later, inflamed papules and pustules can appear usually on the cheek and nose. Telangiectasia, on the other hand, is the appearance of tiny, clustered blood vessels on the nose. Both of these conditions can disrupt our complexions and lead to a lack of self-confidence.
Rosacea occurs due to an alteration of the immune system on the surface of the skin which comes from an abnormality of a protein referred to as a cathelicidin peptide. Over-expression of this protein results in an inflammatory response that manifests as redness, enlarged vessels and irritation. This immune response may be genetic, environmental or a combination of both. Telangiectasia works in a similar way and can, in fact, be caused by rosacea itself.
